Remember this canine American hero and his incredible story

The Fourth of July is right around the corner, which means it’s never been a better time to honor our American heroes no matter what species they are.

Honoring our veterans is something we should do no matter what day it is. We don’t need a national holiday to take a moment to think about the sacrifices made so we can be afforded the opportunity to even take the moment in the first place.

Military service dogs are some of the most underrated American heroes we have, and today we use our #ThrowbackThursday to honor Lex. He was a military dog wounded in an attack that killed his handler, US Marine Corps Cpl. Dustin J. Lee.

As the story goes, Lex refused to leave the battlefield, despite the danger, to remain by his handler’s side. Wounded an unable to continue his service, Lex was released from service and adopted by Dustin’s family.

It’s a harrowing tale of heartbreak and mourning that we should take time to ponder this Fourth of July.
